Introduced by BR at nationalisation these small hoppers were commonly operated in areas using gravity coal drops or for supply limestone and aggregates to industrial concerns with facilities to handle bottom discharged loads.
Built in multiple batches for the NCB from the early 1950s onwards these wagons were an intrinsic part of operations at many collieries, particularly those in the North East of England.
